On behalf of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, and it’s member schools Welcome to the 2013 SUBWAY Junior Varsity Basketball Championships.

Over 5000 student athletes play high school basketball making it one of our most popular activities. Hundreds of hours of hard work and commitment have gone into practices, games, and tournaments in preparation for this weekend. We wish you success and best of luck as you strive to achieve your ultimate goal of being proclaimed MHSAA Provincial Champion.

Thanks to the host organizing committee for their efforts in organizing these provincials. The support of all volunteers - students, staff, parents, sponsors and the community is appreciated and is a major factor in the success of this championship.

A special ‘Thank You’ to our major partner, Subway. The support of our other provincial sponsors including Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, Wilson, MTS, Boston Pizza, Manitoba’s Credit Unions, Manitoba Hydro, Red River Co-op, and Sport Manitoba is also very much appreciated.

MHSAA – “The other half of education”

On behalf of The Red River Valley School Division Board of Trustees and staff, we would like to congratulate all the student athletes for qualifying for the 2013 AAA/AAAA Provincial Junior Varsity Basketball Championships and extend a warm welcome to athletes, coaches, managers, parents and fans.

We would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Sanford Collegiate Staff and tournament organizers who, in cooperation with the Manitoba High School Athletics Association, have organized this excellent event for all participants.

Players, represent your local school and community with pride! Your perseverance and determination in getting here is something you should be proud of.

As a high school athlete you will, in the next few days, experience some wonderful highs and tough lows out on the court.  These highs and lows, along with the pure joy of participating in an athletic sport that you love, is something all athletes strive for – but by getting this far, you all know that being a well-rounded athlete is about more than the athletic experiences.

All of you who are participating in this AAA/AAAA Provincial Junior Varsity Basketball Championship are true role models.  With this in mind, we would challenge you to conduct yourselves in a manner that’s suitable for others to emulate, both on the court and off.  One important way to do this is to value teamwork. Whether you are a competitive athlete working towards excellence in a sport or just playing for fun, teamwork is extremely important.  On a sports team, you can have the best individuals in the world, but if they can’t work together as a team, their chances for successes are limited.  As competition becomes fiercer, those groups that are truly working together as a team will shine.

We also challenge all of you – participants and spectators alike – to respect the game, the players and the officials.

Play hard and have fun!
